Personality:
Given his young appearance at first sight, no one would think he is the infamous Souji Okita, the most deadly swordsman of the Shinsengumi.
A man with great kindness, someone who despite the circumstances always offers a smile which has a huge effect on people who get to know him; it can be gentle for the children, the women and the elders, his comrades and mainly the people he loves. However, it can also be scary when he raises his sword against someone. If one lives to tell, the enemies would talk about the smile of a demon when killing. His 'keep smiling' mindset is a model in resilience, he won't be defeated by mean spiritedness, and his firm, unaffected smile no matter the animosity he encounters symbolizes the stubborn fortitude and grit underline his optimism.
Even such kindness has a reassuring effect that makes people change their minds about a situation or certain people who commit unconventional acts, he realizes when there is a noble purpose behind (as seen with the Vice-Commander Toshizo Hijikata).
He enjoys making jokes to those around him. Sometimes his jokes are in an effort to tease, others to fake not understanding the situation and some with a certain goal behind.
His playful side is why children look up to him and enjoy his company since they are able to see his true self: the Yagi children used to throw mud at him for being from the Miburoshigumi until he protected them from imminent harm. He was adored by his former "mistress's" toddler daughter Yuki, even she called him "father" after multiple visits.
At every chance and when duty has no place in his spare time, Souji is a sweets lover, in all its forms, colors and flavors and whenever possible he brags about his sweet tooth.
He has a hard time when it comes to thinking, something he admits himself and when they let him know despite him making faces and complaints. Many times would seem he doesn't pay attention to pressing matters, that he acts very confident with anyone or anything. Sometimes, it is complicated to know if he is only pretending or doesn't have knowledge of what is happening, Souji purposely chooses to act that way.
When he really resolves into it: he could find out when the Shinsengumi had gone through a delicate matter involving Kamo Serizawa, when he tried to save Kamiya from being killed by one of the survivors of the Ikedaya affair, when he deciphered a code message by the spy, Suzumu Yamazaki and when Kamiya is sent as a spy to confirm Ryoma Sakamoto's identity.
Not as shallow as one would think.
Souji has a nature for caring too much for those who have been important throughout his life. First and foremost, Isami Kondō is the most important; while most bushi have sworn their lives to either the Emperor or the Shogun, Souji has sworn his life to his master. Speak ill about Kondō and his demeanor will immediately change to an unkind side, a pity for those who are there with him. As with Kondō, there's also Toshizo Hijikata, the second person he admires, unquestionably follows his decisions and sees through them. The third person is Seizaburo Kamiya (Sei), the girl disguised as a man who looks out for at all times against any man trying to approach her with ulterior motives or to harm her. Each time he wishes for her to leave the Shinsengumi and retake her life as a girl, not realizing that for Kamiya being with him is her reason to become bushi as someone who also wants to protect him with her life.
Being raised and instructed in kenjutsu by Kondō and Hijikata (in his childhood by his sister Mitsu), his strictness is a reflection of that upbringing. By becoming an assistant teacher, the way he makes others see their mistakes is raw and severe, that is his fame when he teaches. Even worse, when he and Kamiya have a disagreement or a fight, he takes out his hidden frustration on his students in their practice. Not only that: Kamiya's stubbornness doing the opposite of what he says reveals his hard-hearted side, forgetting mostly she is a girl by hitting or shouting at her, neverminding if both are in public.
Through his actions in taking care of Kamiya and teaching her the Way of the Sword, his feelings towards her are beginning to bloom without him noticing. Because of that, he also brings his jealousy out when other men try to court her believing in her identity as a man: he can't stand when Kashitaro Itō hugs her, or acts numb when Goro Nakamura shows his love for her fervently... even Hajime Saitō, the Third Captain of the Shinsengumi, has an interest in Kamiya and Souji can't help spying on them from afar.
In effect, anyone who pursues Kamiya, in how they want her to be theirs, his demeanor changes radically, albeit his emotions are so in control he can't discern his own 'pang of jealousy'.
Unlike them, he inadvertently hugs her when something bad happens to her or manages to get her out of a situation of danger unharmed, licks her wounds and scrapes, sniffs at her with the false pretense of bringing sweets on her and sometimes his words are misinterpreted, treating her like a "daughter or niece".
That's how an idiot he is.
Because he is so devoted to the sword, he has become known as one of the Shinsengumi "demons". He is not afraid of killing friends and foes all the same if it means protecting his master and the Shinsengumi, by a higher-rank order or anyone who violates the Bushidō within the group regulations. It has been seen when he was ordered to kill Kamo Serizawa in secret by orders from the Lord of Aizu, when Heisuke Yamanami was sentenced to seppuku and asked Souji to become his kaishakunin, beheading him in the end and many other times when a comrade decided to desert the group they had the same fate as Yamanami.
His devotion to the cause of his 'truth' is also the reason why he has no interest in taking a bride nor have any children of his own, not even having a woman for pleasurable needs. Love doesn't partake on his seeking to become the best swordsman, to serve the Shogun and to die alongside his master Kondō.
On the other hand, Kondō doesn't want his devotion blind his ability to make his own way in life, but for Souji there is nothing more than dedicating himself to his service, even if his master makes him see his mistake and directs him to have something more than just finding death next to him.
Abilities & Inventory:
Souji doesn't have any kind of magical or supernatural powers. First of all, he is a jukutō (assistant instructor) in the Shiei Hall Dojo. He is a practitioner of the Tennen Rishin-ryu since the age of nine and became a instructor at eighteen, named to become the Fifth Master in Kondō's will if he were to die. Because of his talent to learn from a early age and to get along with his swift motions naturally, he is considerably fast and quite sensitive to his surroundings, to feel others close and the air of their attacks. His signature technique Sandanzuki, which thrusts three times in a single move: head, left and right shoulder.
As a side note, he hasn't contracted tuberculosis from the canon point I'm taking him from. Thanks to a medical check-up by Ryojun Matsumoto, the Shogun's doctor, his health is very good and stable, despite that he had collapsed from a heatstroke at the Ikedaya.
He comes with:
• A set of daishō: daitō (a long sword, also called katana) and shōtō (short sword, also called wakizashi). The daitō is a Kiku-Ichimonji which Souji affectionately calls "Okiku-chan".
• His first daitō Kaga Kiyomitsu.
• His third daitō Yamatonokami Yasusada.
• A pocket picture frame with a photograph of him and Seizaburo Kamiya dressed as a girl.
